How to Put Out an Electrical Fire

electrical fire

It is important to mention that if you think that you will not be able to contain the electrical fire yourself, then you definitely need to call the professionals and let them handle it. At that point, all you would need to work about it making sure you and those around you are safe.

If you have called 911 and the firemen and police on the way you will need to proceed with caution in order to try and get the fire under control. We cannot stress enough that it is imperative you only proceed further if you think you can do so safely.

  1. If the fire isn’t too close to breaker box and you can get to the breaker box, turn off the main power. This will cut off the source and make it easier to proceed.
  2. After cutting power to the source you can spray it with your fire extinguisher. Before you just start spraying it, let’s have a lesson in fire extinguisher use. Make sure the fire extinguisher you have in your home is a class c or abc extinguisher. If it isn’t marked or it isn’t one of those DO NOT USE IT!!!! The effects could be disastrous. If it is one of those simply point the extinguisher at the base of the fire and use wide sweeping motions back and forth.
  3. If the fire is small enough you may be able to smother it with ordinary baking soda.
  4. If you cannot fight the fire leave the house immediately!
